When you are trying to sell your home you may acknowledge that your kitchen is in need of a refresh, however generally this isn't the time you are going to be willing to spend a lot of money on it. In the past replacing has felt like the only realistic option but even just replacing the doors can be a lot more expensive then you think. Over the next 3 blog posts I will be exploring more affordable solutions...

Part 1 - Painting:

If you have an older style wooden kitchen then painting is probably the best option. You can colour match all fitted trims and details rather then removing them. With shaker styles and rustic looks still on trend you can achieve great eye catching results.

DIY:

Affordable but time consuming, preparation is key as is choosing the right type of paint – ask your local paint supplier for advice (I don't recommend chalk paint although others may disagree). Getting a professional finish is really important otherwise it could end up looking worse then when you started.

Professional Paint Job:

Seek out local painters and decorators who have experience in painting kitchen cupboards. This will be a lot more expensive then the DIY option but you should feel more confident about the end result and it is much less of a commitment on your time. Prices for having your kitchen painted start at about £1000.

Best of Both:

You can send your kitchen off to be painted professionally. They will provide you with a painting to kit to do the parts that you can't remove. However you will need to remove, deliver and refit your doors, and do some painting yourself. Priced from around £600 (kitchen size dependant) its fairly affordable and the finish will be professional and hardwearing.

At time of writing a client of mine is currently embarking on option 3 … in November we will be visiting the workshop of Gallant Restorations to deliver the kitchen doors and I will post further blog posts on this process.

Colours:

If you are planning to sell your house choose cream or light grey a shade that is modern and nuetral but not too individual.

If you are doing it for yourself to enjoy then choose a colour you love. There’s a big trend for colourful kitchens at the moment – Navy Blue, Green or even Pink! Most companies will be able to colour match your choice.
